MOSCOW (Worthy News) – War was brought to Russia’s capital early Tuesday as drone strikes hit Moscow, damaging several buildings and prompting evacuations, the city’s mayor and other sources said.

At least two of the drones crashed into residential towers, Russian state media reported, citing state emergency services. Some eight drones were involved in the attack, though Russia later said all had been intercepted.

It comes after General Kyrylo Budanov, the head of Ukraine’s military intelligence, warned of a swift response to the massive Russian strikes hitting Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities. Kyiv did not immediately claim responsibility for Tuesday’s attacks, however.

On May 3, the Kremlin was targeted in a drone attack that U.S. intelligence officials said was probably orchestrated by one of Ukraine’s special military or intelligence units.

Sergei Sobyanin, the mayor of Moscow, said that the damage to the buildings was minor and that there were no serious injuries. Residents were evacuated as a precaution, and officials were sorting through the details of the explosions, he said.

Moscow is about 496 kilometers (310) from Ukraine’s border. While there have been drone explosions near the capital, this appears to be the first time drones have hit a building inside the city.

The drone strikes raised questions about the air defenses of nuclear-armed Russia. They were also due to increase unease in Western quarters about a possible escalation of the war in Ukraine.

Tuesday’s drone strikes came shortly after two private buildings were ablaze and several cars damaged in the Darnytskyi district of Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, just across the Dnipro river.

Officials said falling debris caused the blazes, as Ukraine’s air defenses intercepted more than 20 drones. At least one person is reported killed.

Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko described the latest attack as “massive,” urging residents “not to leave shelters.”

It was the 17th attack on the capital since the beginning of May, including a rare daytime strike on Monday.

Despite the human suffering, President Volodymyr Zelensky praised US-made Patriot air defenses supplied to Ukraine, saying they ensured “100 percent downing of any Russian missiles”.

Russia, he said, “wants to follow the path of evil to the end, that is, to its defeat, because evil cannot have any other end but defeat. The world must see that terror is losing.”
