(Worthy News) – The US State Department has stated it is working to secure the release of an American Christian nurse and her daughter who were kidnapped in Haiti last week, but declined to give any information on who the abductors might be or whether they have made any ransom demands, USA Today reports. Poverty and disaster-stricken Haiti has long been plagued by extreme gang violence and political instability.

Originally from New Hampshire, nurse Alix Dorsainvil was working at a Christian-ministry-run health clinic near the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince, when she and her daughter were abducted from the clinic grounds by armed men on Thursday, USA Today reports. Dorsainvil is married to the director and founder of El Roi, a Christian humanitarian organization.

In a press briefing about the kidnapping, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said on Monday afternoon that “the safety and security of American citizens overseas is our highest priority.”

While he declined to answer any questions about the efforts to secure Dorasainvil’s release, Miller added: “We are in regular contact with the Haitian authorities. We’ll continue to work with them and our U.S. government interagency partners, but because it’s an ongoing law enforcement investigation, there’s not more detail I can offer.”

Jean-Junior Joseph, a senior advisor to Ariel Henry, Haiti’s prime minister, said in a separate statement that the Haitian National Police is also “working on” the case, USA Today said.
