(Worthy News) – An Islamic extremist in eastern Uganda set his wife on fire and left her for dead last month, after discovering she had converted to Christianity, Morning Star News (MSN) reports. While Christianity is legal in Uganda, former Muslims are increasingly at risk of violent attacks from Islamic extremist relatives and community members.

A 32-year-old mother of three children in Kenkebu village, Budaka town, Hajara Namwase accepted Christ in May, while her husband was away on a months-long business trip in South Sudan, MSN reports. Since that time, Namwase has attended a small group fellowship, continuing in her faith walk with Christ.

On Oct.17, Namwase’s husband came home and became enraged when he saw her Bible and Gospel tracts. “I got scared upon seeing him, because I had some gospel tracts and a small New Testament Bible which I could not hide,” Namwase told her friend, whose identity is withheld for security reasons.

“He took some bedsheets, covered them around my body and then removed me from the house,” Namwase told her friend. “He forced me to lie down. He took the petrol, then poured it on me and thereafter took a matchbox, lit it, and the fire began burning me up.”

Namwase’s daughter called their neighbors who came and took her to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital where she is recovering from third degree burns, MSN reports. Hajara’s husband is understood to have fled to South Sudan.

“Namwase said she is worried about where she will stay after her release, as all her relatives are Muslims, and what will become of her children, ages 4, 6 and 9, who have come under the care of their paternal grandmother,” MSN said.
