KYIV/BUDAPEST (Worthy News) – Ukraine’s capital city was struggling Saturday with “Russia’s largest drone attack” in the war so far, injuring several, the Ukrainian Air Force and other sources said.

At least five people were wounded as the continuing rumble of air defenses and explosions woke residents in Kyiv, according to witnesses.

Iranian-designed Shahed kamikaze drones were hitting different districts of Kyiv in the early hours of Saturday, with more waves coming as the sun rose, reporters said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Saturday that most of the drones were shot down, but the intensity of the drones raised concerns that Ukraine will face a brutal winter.

Hundreds of thousands of people have been killed and injured since Russia invaded Ukraine in February last year, authorities say.

As fighting intensified, Zelensky discussed “efforts to maintain European unity” in a call with outgoing Dutch prime minister Mark Rutte after anti-Islam politician Geert Wilders’ Party for Freedom (PVV) received the most votes in the Dutch election.

UKRAINE CONCERNED

Wilders has been critical about sending weapons to Ukraine, saying the Netherlands needs the weapons and should not join another war.

Kajsa Ollongren, the Dutch defense minister, said she hoped military support to Kyiv would continue but also expressed concerns about the PVV’s stance on Ukraine.

Yet, Ukraine has come under Western criticism for its perceived slow progress in its counteroffensive against Russian troops.

Robert Fico, Slovakia’s populist prime minister, said he considered the war between Ukraine and Russia a “frozen conflict.”

However, the British Ministry of Defence said Russian troops in Ukraine continued to suffer mass casualties from Ukrainian long-range precision strikes well behind the frontline.

Yet, with both sides suffering, Ukraine and Russia face pressure to launch peace talks.
