(Worthy News) – An alleged Israeli airstrike near the Iranian embassy in Damascus on Monday claimed the lives of at least six people, including Mohammed Reza Zahedi, a general in the Quds Force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), who oversaw operations in Lebanon and Syria.

Zahedi ranks as the most senior Iranian official to be killed since the beginning of the current conflict, surpassing Sayyed Reza Mousavi, who was killed in December, according to The Jerusalem Post. Zahedi represents the highest-ranking IRGC officer to be killed since Qasem Soleimani’s assassination by the U.S. in January 2020.

Footage revealed that the airstrike targeted a building in the Mezzeh district of Damascus, situated next to the Iranian embassy, which Iran’s SSN news website reported as the consulate and ambassador’s residence.

Nasser Kanaani, spokesman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, urged the world to condemn the airstrike. Although the airstrike obliterated the consular section of Iran’s embassy in Syria, the main embassy building was left unscathed.

Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported, citing sources, that the strike resulted in at least six fatalities, noting that this figure has not been officially confirmed. Reports from Iranian media indicated that Zahedi was in a meeting with leaders from the Palestinian Islamic Jihad when the airstrike occurred, although these claims have not been independently confirmed.

The statement from the Iranian Embassy in Syria announced, “F-35 planes fired six missiles at the Iranian consulate in Damascus” and continued, “The exact number and names of those killed will be published following the clearing-out of the rubble.”

During a Monday conversation with the Syrian foreign minister, Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian stated that Tehran blames Israel for the attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus and emphasized that the Iranian response would be “harsh.” Amirabdollahian further stressed that the strike constitutes “a breach of all international conventions.”

Likewise, the Iranian Embassy in Lebanon declared, “This barbaric Israeli aggression is a flagrant violation of international laws, diplomatic norms, and the requirements of the Vienna Convention,” highlighting the severity of the incident in terms of international law.

Israel rarely acknowledges conducting strikes in Syria, yet Israeli officials have consistently emphasized that the IDF will take all necessary actions to thwart Iran’s attempts to target Israel through its proxies.

Nevertheless, military experts have described this as a significant escalation in Israel’s approach to Iran and its proxy forces.
