Israel Fires Air-Launched Ballistic Missiles at Hamas Leaders in Qatar
by Emmitt Barry, with reporting from Washington D.C. Bureau Staff
(Worthy News) – Israel’s surprise strike on Hamas political leaders in Qatar showcased its growing arsenal of advanced ballistic missiles and its ability to deploy them at long range with precision, according to an exclusive report by the Wall Street Journal.
Eight Israeli F-15s and four F-35s flew to the Red Sea to launch the attack on Tuesday, the WSJ said. From there, some of the jets fired air-launched ballistic missiles—systems known as “Golden Horizon” and “Rocks”—on a high-arc trajectory into space over Saudi Arabia before plunging toward Doha. By avoiding direct overflight of Arab countries, Israel sought to sidestep diplomatic backlash while demonstrating that its missile technology can strike deep inside the region without relying on traditional flight paths.
Caught by Surprise
The Trump administration was notified only minutes before launch, U.S. officials told the WSJ. By the time American infrared sensors detected the missiles’ heat signatures and confirmed their path toward Qatar, there was no way to intervene.
“Notice was given so close to actual launching of missiles that there was no way to reverse or halt the order,” a senior U.S. defense official said. President Donald Trump ordered his envoy Steve Witkoff to alert Qatar, but the warning reportedly arrived ten minutes after the missiles struck their target.
Precision, But Limited Success
A WSJ reporter visiting the site in Doha described the middle floor of the building as destroyed. At the same time, much of the structure remained standing—evidence of highly accurate, small-warhead ballistic munitions. Despite the precision, Hamas leaders Khalil al-Hayya and Zaher Jabarin were not killed, though several officials were injured. A member of Qatar’s internal security forces died in the blast.
Regional Fallout
The strike highlighted Israel’s military superiority, but also deepened regional anger. Qatar’s Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani told the U.N. Security Council that Israel had gone “beyond any borders” with its missile strike. Arab leaders are preparing to meet in Doha to craft a joint response.
The U.N. Security Council condemned the attack without naming Israel, while Washington privately expressed frustration. Trump reportedly had a heated call with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, expressing anger at being blindsided by an ally with such a destabilizing missile strike.
Missile Arsenal Revealed
The WSJ noted that Israel’s air-launched ballistic missile systems were first exposed in leaked U.S. intelligence documents in 2024, describing them as capable of being mounted on fighter aircraft and fired at distant targets with high precision. The Qatar operation marked the first known combat use of such missiles—demonstrating both Israel’s advanced military reach and its willingness to act unilaterally, even at the risk of alienating allies.
Military analysts say the episode complicates U.S. plans to build a joint regional air defense network involving Israel and Gulf states against Iran. With thousands of American troops stationed at Qatar’s Al Udeid Air Base, the strike has alarmed Washington and fueled Arab concerns that Israel is becoming a “loose cannon with hegemonic aspirations,” as one Tel Aviv security researcher told the WSJ.
