MANCHESTER, UK (Worthy News) – Two people were killed and three others seriously injured Thursday morning after a stabbing and car-ramming attack outside a synagogue in Manchester, before police shot dead the suspect amid fears of a marauding terror assault.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed that a man attacked a security guard with a knife outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Crumpsall, then drove a car into members of the public. Officers said two victims died at the scene, and a third person–believed to be the offender–was killed after armed police opened fire at 9:38 a.m.

Paramedics treated several others, with three remaining in serious condition. Authorities revealed “suspicious items” were found on the attacker, prompting a bomb disposal response. Six minutes after the first emergency call at 9:31 a.m., GMP declared “Plato,” the national codeword for a suspected terror attack.

Witnesses described chaos as police with rifles shouted at bystanders to move back before shots were fired, preventing the suspect from entering the synagogue, which was full for Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish year.

National Response

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who cut short a European summit in Denmark to chair an emergency COBRA meeting in London, called the incident “horrific” and “appalling.” He ordered additional police deployment at synagogues nationwide.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla said they were “deeply shocked and saddened by the attack on such a significant day for the Jewish community.”

Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham described it as a “vile attack on our Jewish community on its holiest day,” pledging full support. Political leaders across the spectrum, from Conservative head Kemi Badenoch to Green Party leader Zack Polanski and Reform UK’s Nigel Farage, condemned the assault as “disgusting” and “abhorrent.”

The Israeli embassy in London said the attack was “deeply distressing” and that it was working closely with UK authorities and the Community Security Trust (CST), which monitors antisemitism. CST’s Dave Rich called it an “appalling attack,” stressing that Yom Kippur synagogues are always under heavy security.

Fear Among Community

Members of Manchester’s Jewish community expressed shock and fear. One man outside the synagogue said, “It is the holiest day of the year and we get this. There is no place for Jews in Britain anymore. It’s over.”

Raphi Bloom, a local Jewish charity leader, linked the violence to rising antisemitism since Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel. “We’ve been faced with a tsunami of Jew-hatred since. Almost every Jew in this country realized this day would come,” he said.

The attack, striking on the solemn day of atonement and prayer, has intensified calls for heightened synagogue security across the UK as the Jewish community mourns and braces for further threats.

Prophetic Insights

As the Jewish community reels from the horrific Yom Kippur attack on a Manchester synagogue that left two dead and several injured, many Christians are reflecting on the prophetic dimension of such tragedies in light of Scripture.

Jeremiah 16:16 declares, “Behold, I am sending for many fishers, declares the Lord, and they shall catch them. And afterward I will send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain and every hill, and out of the clefts of the rocks.”

For centuries, Christians have understood this passage as a twofold pattern in God’s dealings with Israel. First, He would send “fishers” — movements that gently draw the Jewish people back to the land of Israel. In modern history, this has been seen in the rise of Zionism, waves of aliyah, and even Christians helping Jews return to their biblical homeland.

But Jeremiah also foresaw “hunters,” forces of persecution that would drive Jewish people back to Israel against their will. From pogroms to the Holocaust, and now rising antisemitic violence in the West, these “hunters” remind the world that outside of Israel, Jews remain vulnerable. The Yom Kippur synagogue attack in Manchester is another stark warning of that reality.

A Call to Christians

The prophetic question for Christians is this: how should we respond? Scripture makes clear that Israel’s restoration is both physical and spiritual. God is regathering His people to their land, but He also promises a day when “all Israel shall be saved” (Romans 11:26).

Our role is to pray and intercede — for the Jewish people’s safety, for their physical return to the land promised to their forefathers, and ultimately for their spiritual awakening through their Messiah.

The attack in Manchester, happening on Yom Kippur — the Day of Atonement — underscores the urgency. While Jewish people fasted and prayed for forgiveness, violence erupted at the synagogue gates. Christians are called to stand in the gap: to comfort, to protect, and above all, to pray for God’s covenant purposes for Israel to come to fullness.

As antisemitism rises, the prophetic picture becomes clearer: the hunters are here, but so is God’s sovereign plan. The nations rage, but the Lord is still gathering His people.
