KYIV/BUDAPEST (Worthy News) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused the West of showing “zero real reaction” to Russia’s escalating bombing campaign after a massive assault Sunday killed at least six and injured 18 amid allegations that China assists Moscow in its attacks on Ukraine.

In a video address, Zelenskyy said Russia had refused all offers to stop its all-out war. It was deliberately trying to destroy civilian infrastructure – in particular Ukraine’s natural gas and energy system – ahead of winter, he said.

He added, “There is no worthy, strong reaction from the world to everything that is happening. To the constant increase in the scale and audacity of the strikes. That is why Putin is doing this: he is simply laughing at the West, at its silence and lack of strong action in response.”

He spoke after the western city of Lviv, usually considered one of the safest in the country, endured its most sustained bombardment since the start of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s full-scale invasion, officials said.

For five hours, Russian Shahed drones, cruise missiles, and Kinzhal ballistic missiles pounded the city about 70 kilometers (43 miles) from the Polish border.

NO POWER SUPPLIES

Part of Lviv was left without electricity, according to Mayor Andriy Sadovyi. He reported large fires in several areas, including a civilian industrial park, while a school, a kindergarten, and a church were also damaged.

Regional governor Maksym Kozytskyi urged residents to keep windows closed and wear gas masks or respirators as acrid smoke filled the city.

On Sunday morning, witnesses said ash was still falling as residents ventured out to church services. A twisted drone fragment lay outside a block of flats, cordoned off by red tape.

Zelenskyy said numerous regions were also hit, including Ivano-Frankivsk, Odesa, Kherson, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, and Zaporizhzhia.

A 15-year-old girl and three relatives reportedly died when their home was flattened in the village of Lapaivka. In Zaporizhzhia, a woman was killed and six others were injured, including a 16-year-old girl.

TRAIN STATION STRIKE

The latest attacks followed weekend violence that also included a Russian drone strike on passenger trains in Shostka, in Ukraine’s northern Sumy region.

One person was killed and about 30 others injured, Governor Oleh Hryhorov confirmed.

Zelenskyy called the attack “brutal,” posting a video of burning and wrecked train carriages on social media. “The Russians could not have been unaware that they were targeting civilians. This is terrorism, which the world has no right to ignore,” he wrote.

Ukraine’s rail chief Oleksandr Pertsovsky said Russia was intensifying strikes on the rail network to cut off frontline communities, with no military purpose other than to “sow panic.”

These observations underscored Zelenskyy’s renewed appeals for stronger air defenses and a long-sought no-fly zone, which allies have so far resisted.

CHINA INVOLVEMENT ALLEGED

Senior Ukrainian intelligence official Oleh Alexandrov claimed that China is providing satellite intelligence to Russia to aid missile targeting, including on sites with foreign investment. “There is evidence of a high level of cooperation … in conducting satellite reconnaissance … in order to identify … strategic objects for targeting,” he said.

There was no confirmation from Moscow or Beijing, but both countries have increased their cooperation.

As the extent of the attacks became clear, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, accused Moscow of “waging terror attacks on Ukrainian civilians and infrastructure” to mask its “failed summer offensive.”

She added, “It will not stop until it is forced to. The EU will support Kyiv for as long as it takes.”

Poland’s operational command confirmed its air force scrambled jets in response to the strikes near its border: “Polish and allied aircraft are operating in our airspace, while ground-based air defence and radar reconnaissance systems have been brought to the highest state of readiness.”

STANDING WITH UKRAINE

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrote on X that the EU “stands with Ukraine as its people once again suffer at the hands of Russian barbarity,” citing the attack on the Shostka train station.

In response, Ukraine’s military said it again struck the Kirishi oil refinery near St. Petersburg, more than 1,200 kilometers (745 miles) from Ukraine. Russian officials confirmed that drones were downed and a fire broke out in the industrial zone.

Despite the devastation, Lviv continued to host its annual BookForum, one of Eastern Europe’s largest literary events.

Ukrainian poets Artur Dron and Julia Musakovska, along with international authors such as Fiona Benson, Bernardine Evaristo, and Nobel laureate Olga Tokarczuk, were among those participating in the event as Ukrainians try to keep some sense of normalcy amid ongoing warfare.

More than a million people are believed to have been killed and injured since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
