THE HAGUE/PARIS (Worthy News) – France paid an emotional tribute Thursday to the 130 people killed ten years ago during a night of coordinated attacks by Islamic State extremists who targeted cafés, restaurants, and the Bataclan concert hall in Paris.

Ceremonies across the French capital marked a decade since the November 13, 2015 massacre — the deadliest attack on French soil since World War Two — which left a lasting scar on the nation and reshaped its security laws.

At the main memorial event, relatives and officials gathered outside the Stade de France, where the assault had begun with suicide bombings that killed bus driver Manuel Dias, the first victim of the attack. President Emmanuel Macron observed a minute of silence and laid a wreath in Dias’ memory before travelling to each of the attack sites to honour those killed and wounded.

Dias’ daughter Sophie, speaking through tears, said: “Since that November 13, there is an emptiness that cannot be filled.” She urged France to ensure younger generations remember the victims and the “values of our republic,” adding that her father “left far too soon, for no reason at all.”

Victims’ associations say two survivors later died by suicide, bringing the total death toll to 132.

POLITICAL REACTIONS IN EUROPE

The anniversary also resonated beyond France. In the Netherlands, Dutch politician Geert Wilders, leader of the anti-Islam Party for Freedom (PVV), told parliament: “Today it is 10 years since the ISIS attack. I want to remember and honor the victims and their families.”

Wilders spoke days after national elections in which his PVV and the center-left Democrats 66 (D66) emerged as the largest parties, each winning 26 seats.

Several Dutch parties have since refused to cooperate with the PVV in forming a new coalition government.

The 2015 assault began when three suicide bombers struck outside the Stade de France. Gunmen then opened fire at five locations across central Paris before storming the Bataclan concert hall, where they killed 90 people during a performance by the Eagles of Death Metal.

“It was an attack on France’s culture — on people who were simply out enjoying life,” said historian Denis Peschanski, reflecting on the attacks that made “everyone a potential victim.”

THREAT REMAINS, OFFICIALS WARN

Survivor Sebastian Lascoux, now 46, recalled how concertgoers “ended up all squashed together and collapsed as one,” describing the “smell of blood” as gunmen carried out the massacre.

One of his friends was shot dead while trying to shield another. Lascoux still suffers from post-traumatic stress and avoids crowds and enclosed spaces; loud noises continue to remind him of gunfire.

France’s interior minister Laurent Nuñez said that while a large-scale coordinated assault like the one in 2015 is now less likely due to the weakening of Islamic State, the country still faces a “high” terror threat from individuals who radicalize quickly and plot violent acts.

“A decade on, the threat has mutated,” Nuñez told French broadcaster BFM TV. “But it has not disappeared.”
