LISBON (Worthy News) – The leader of a radical-right populist party placed second in Portugal’s presidential election and will face a center-left opponent in a runoff vote next month, official results showed Monday, underscoring deepening political fragmentation in the European Union member state.

With almost all votes counted from the first round, André Ventura, leader of the Chega (Enough) party he founded less than seven years ago, won about 24 percent of the vote, finishing behind center-left Socialist candidate António José Seguro, who led with nearly 31 percent, results showed.

Neither candidate secured an outright majority, forcing a runoff on February 8.

Analysts say the vote could mark another breakthrough for Europe’s rising nationalist right amid economic uncertainty.

FIRST RUNOFF SINCE 1986

The fragmentation of Portugal’s political landscape and the rise of what critics describe as the far right have led to a presidential runoff for the first time since 1986, and only the second time since democracy was established in 1976.

Ventura hailed the outcome as a turning point, telling supporters it was a “historic result” that showed many voters wanted change after years of rule by traditional parties.

While largely ceremonial, the Portuguese presidency carries important constitutional authority.

The president can veto legislation, dissolve parliament, call snap elections, and represent Portugal internationally. In periods of political crisis, these powers can prove decisive.

The president is also commander-in-chief of the armed forces, a largely symbolic but constitutionally significant role that places the office at the apex of the country’s defense structure.

ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL CHALLENGES AHEAD

Whoever wins the presidency will become head of state of a nation facing several key challenges, including high costs of living, housing affordability, and concerns about economic stability — issues voters consistently cite as top priorities.

Portugal has also grappled with political polarization and voter disillusionment, trends that have helped fuel support for Chega and other non-traditional political movements.

The Partido Socialista (the Socialist Party of Portugal) backed Seguro, who promised to “honour the vote of confidence” given to him, adding that it was a win for democracy and vowing to do so again on February 8.

In his speech late Sunday, he invited “all democrats, progressives and humanists” to join his candidacy and together “defeat extremism”. The winning candidate in the first round also promised to be “the president of all Portuguese people”.

“I’m ready to be the president of the new times. It’s time to defeat fear and raise hope,” Seguro stressed. He added that his victory in the second round would mean the “victory of Portugal, of freedom and democracy,” while urging calm and unity ahead of the runoff.

Outgoing President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is term-limited after two consecutive mandates and was unable to run again. The runoff is due to draw intense domestic and international attention as Portugal weighs continuity against a potential political shift.
