Ukraine Peace Talks Clouded By Middle East Escalation As Zelenskyy Backs U.S. Strikes On Iran

WASHINGTON/MOSCOW/KYIV (Worthy News) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy indicated that rapidly escalating tensions in the Middle East could postpone the next round of U.S.-brokered peace talks between Ukraine, Russia, and the United States, as Moscow condemned recent U.S.-Israeli strikes on its ally Iran.

Zelenskyy said the timing and location of the next trilateral meeting would depend on the regional security situation and what he described as “real diplomatic possibilities.” Talks had been expected to take place this month following earlier discussions in Geneva.

The remarks came as Russia denounced the strikes on Iran as “a preplanned and unprovoked act of armed aggression against a sovereign and independent UN member state,” and called for an immediate halt to military operations and a return to diplomacy.

Tehran has supported Moscow’s war effort against Ukraine, including by supplying Shahed-type drones that Russia has used extensively in attacks on Ukrainian cities and energy infrastructure.

Despite ongoing Russian missile and drone strikes and Ukrainian counterattacks, diplomatic contacts between Kyiv, Moscow, and Washington have continued in recent weeks, though no breakthrough has been announced.

MIDEAST TENSIONS MAR DIPLOMACY

Zelenskyy said he would issue new directives to Ukraine’s negotiating team but did not elaborate on their substance.

Unlike Moscow, he voiced support for the U.S.-led strikes on Iran, arguing that Tehran has played a direct role in supporting Russia’s invasion by providing drone technology.

In a video address, Zelenskyy said Russia has launched “more than 57,000 Shahed-type strike drones” against Ukraine since the start of the war, targeting civilians, cities, and energy facilities.

At the same time, he cautioned against a broader regional escalation, saying it was important that hostilities in the Middle East not expand further.

SECURITY GUARANTEES AT CENTER

U.S. President Donald Trump has urged Moscow and Kyiv to reach a settlement to end Europe’s largest war since 1945.

However Kyiv continues to seek firm security guarantees from the United States and European allies to ensure concrete action if Russia attacks again after any peace deal.

Ukrainian officials say Russian negotiators in Geneva signaled willingness to discuss U.S.-proposed postwar security guarantees.

The Kremlin has not publicly confirmed that position, and no summit has been agreed between Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

FIGHTING CONTINUES DESPITE TALKS

Moscow has repeatedly said it remains “open” to negotiations but insists any settlement must address what it calls the “root causes” of the conflict, including NATO’s eastward expansion — demands Kyiv and its Western allies reject.

Elsewhere, combat persists on multiple fronts. Russia’s Defense Ministry said its forces captured settlements in Ukraine’s Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia regions, claims that could not be independently verified.

Ukraine’s state energy company Naftogaz said Russia struck a gas extraction facility in the Kharkiv region overnight, causing serious damage.

As diplomacy faces renewed uncertainty, drone warfare and ground fighting continue — underscoring that efforts to end the war are shaped not only by battlefield realities but also by geopolitical tensions beyond Eastern Europe.
