Ukrainian Man Kidnapped And Murdered In Bali As Police Hunt Suspects

DENPASAR, INDONESIA (Worthy News) – Authorities on the Indonesian island of Bali are investigating the kidnapping and brutal killing of a Ukrainian man believed to be linked to organized crime in a case that has shocked residents of the resort island, a popular international tourist destination.

Police said the 28-year-old victim disappeared February 15 while riding scooters with two friends on the island.

Authorities have not publicly released the victim’s name.

Witnesses said several men suddenly surrounded the group, forced the victim into a vehicle and drove away.

Shortly afterward, a disturbing video appeared on the messaging platform Telegram showing the badly beaten man with a swollen eye and a torn lip.

RANSOM VIDEO

In the footage he pleaded with his parents to pay a ransom of 10 million dollars demanded by the kidnappers.

“Mama, papa, I beg you, please help me,” the man said in the video. “You have the 10 million they are asking for — please give it back.”

He then showed his bandaged left hand, saying the wound could soon become infected.

“I am going to die,” he added.

On February 26, residents made a grim discovery near a beach in Bali when they found human remains in the water, Worthy News learned.

HUMAN REMAINS FOUND

Police later recovered a skull and additional body parts between large rocks along the shoreline, according to sources familiar with the case.

Authorities said the remains had been cut into pieces and were badly decomposed, complicating the identification process.

Investigators later discovered blood traces inside a nearby villa that matched the victim’s DNA, confirming he had been murdered after the kidnapping.

Police also located the Toyota Avanza vehicle believed to have been used in the abduction.

Authorities are searching for at least six suspects.

SUSPECTS SOUGHT

Several individuals have reportedly been detained, though investigators say some suspects may have already fled the island using multiple passports to conceal their identities.

Police have not yet confirmed the motive for the killing but said the case could be linked to organized crime.

Investigators are continuing to track suspects and examine whether the kidnapping was connected to international criminal networks operating in Southeast Asia.

Officials urged residents and tourists to remain calm as the investigation continues.

The case comes amid a growing influx of foreign nationals — including Russians and Ukrainians — who have relocated to Bali since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

FOREIGNERS IN BALI

Many Russians fled their country after Moscow announced the mobilization of hundreds of thousands of reservists, with tens of thousands traveling to Bali and other tourist destinations.

Estimates suggest that as many as 100,000 Russians moved to Bali in the year following the start of the war, turning parts of the island into hubs for Russian expatriates and digital nomads.

At the same time, numerous Ukrainians also relocated to Bali, often working remotely or living off personal savings while the war continues in their homeland. Some perform in jazz or rock bands on the island, Worthy News established.

Unlike many ordinary citizens affected by the conflict, analysts say many of those relocating from Russia and Ukraine to the Indonesian resort island have the financial resources and international connections needed to live abroad.

Authorities in Bali have acknowledged that the influx of foreigners has created challenges for local law enforcement, including visa violations and criminal activity.

LUXURY ENCLAVES

“I have seen some Russians or Ukrainians flashing cash during parties here,” a bar waiter told Worthy News, speaking on condition of anonymity due to security concerns. “I have mixed feelings about this.”

Worthy News observed luxury gated communities popular among Russian residents hidden behind palm trees.

Yet the waiter said he realizes that while some enjoy a playboy-style lifestyle on the island, “many of their fellow countrymen are dying on the front lines” of the war in Ukraine.
