Trump Extends Iran Ceasefire Deadline as Tensions Escalate in Strait of Hormuz
by Emmitt Barry, Worthy News Washington D.C. Bureau Chief
(Worthy News) – The United States has informed Israel that President Donald Trump has extended the ceasefire deadline with Iran until Sunday, according to Israeli officials, even as violence and uncertainty continue to cloud diplomatic efforts.
The extension has not been formally announced by Trump, and confusion remains over the timeline. Recent U.S. reports have varied widely, initially describing the extension as open-ended, then suggesting a window of “three to five days,” before indicating no fixed deadline at all.
Israeli officials remain skeptical that a breakthrough will be achieved, noting that both Washington and Tehran continue to hold firm to their public positions.
At the same time, the U.S. is maintaining its naval blockade targeting Iran, a move that has intensified tensions across the region. Iran has responded aggressively, detaining vessels and engaging ships in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
Iran Fires on Ships, Seizes Vessels
On April 22, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reported that Iranian forces fired on two commercial vessels in separate incidents near the strait.
In one case, a container ship was attacked by an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) gunboat northeast of Oman, sustaining heavy damage to its bridge. In another, a cargo vessel west of Iran was forced to stop after coming under fire.
Iranian state-linked media described the actions as enforcement measures against ships that ignored warnings. Shortly afterward, Iran reportedly seized two vessels—MSC Francesca and Epaminondas—and escorted them to its shores. A third vessel, Euphoria, was also reportedly targeted.
The incidents mark a significant escalation and the first confirmed ship seizures since the current conflict began.
Blockade Tightens as Military Presence Grows
Despite extending the ceasefire window, Trump signaled no easing of pressure. The U.S. naval blockade—aimed at crippling Iran’s oil exports and limiting its military capabilities—remains firmly in place.
U.S. Central Command reported that at least 28 vessels have been ordered to turn back or return to port since the blockade began. Military officials have indicated the enforcement effort could expand globally, targeting any vessel linked to Iranian support networks.
Meanwhile, the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush is advancing toward the Persian Gulf, further underscoring the growing U.S. military posture in the region.
Iran Condemns ‘Act of War’
Iran has sharply condemned the blockade, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi calling it a violation of the ceasefire and an “act of war.”
Tehran has warned it is prepared to retaliate and insists negotiations cannot resume unless the blockade is lifted. Iranian officials also argue that the narrow geography of the Strait of Hormuz gives them the legal right to impose navigation controls.
The United States and its allies reject that claim, emphasizing the principle of freedom of navigation through one of the world’s most critical energy corridors, which carries roughly one-fifth of global oil shipments.
Trump Highlights Humanitarian Gesture
Amid the escalating tensions, Trump announced what he described as a humanitarian breakthrough, stating that Iran had halted the execution of eight women protesters following his appeal.
According to the president, four of the women will be released, while the remaining four will face reduced prison sentences.
“Very good news,” Trump wrote, thanking Iranian leadership for responding to his request.
Diplomacy Stalls Despite Extension
The ceasefire extension comes as diplomatic efforts appear stalled. Iranian officials have signaled they will not return to negotiations under current conditions, while U.S. leaders continue to demand that Iran reopen the Strait of Hormuz and relinquish its enriched uranium stockpile.
With military pressure mounting and both sides entrenched, the coming days are likely to prove निर्णsive for whether diplomacy can prevail—or whether the conflict deepens further.
