ATLANTA, USA (Worthy News) – Ted Turner, the founder of the U.S.-based Cable News Network (CNN), the world’s first global 24-hour television news broadcaster, has died at the age of 87.

CNN announced the death of its founder and longtime media visionary Wednesday, citing Turner Enterprises, which managed Turner’s land holdings and investments.

The outspoken businessman, born in the U.S. state of Ohio and later based in Atlanta, became known as “The Mouth of the South” for his energetic and often controversial style.

He built a media empire that included cable television’s first superstation, movie and cartoon channels, and professional sports teams such as the Atlanta Braves.

Yet Turner will likely be remembered most for launching CNN in 1980, a network that fundamentally changed the way the world consumed news.

GLOBAL NEWS REVOLUTION

For the first time, viewers could watch major world events unfold live around the clock. CNN became a defining force during some of the late 20th century’s most dramatic moments.

Those moments included coverage of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and massacre in Beijing, including the iconic image of a lone man standing in front of military tanks.

The network also brought extensive reporting from the collapse of communist governments in Romania and across Eastern Europe, events that reshaped the continent after decades of Soviet domination.

CNN’s influence expanded further during the 1991 Gulf War, when millions worldwide watched live broadcasts from Baghdad as coalition forces launched air strikes against Iraq.

The network’s real-time war reporting was viewed as a turning point in journalism and international politics.

‘CNN EFFECT’

In 1991, Time magazine named Turner its “Person of the Year,” praising him for enabling viewers in roughly 150 countries to become direct witnesses to history.

People sitting at home could suddenly see images from wars and revolutions in distant nations almost instantly on their television screens, a major breakthrough in global media.

Observers later coined the term “the CNN effect” to describe how governments and military leaders increasingly had to consider immediate worldwide television coverage when planning military operations and foreign policy decisions.

Beyond journalism, Turner was also known internationally as a philanthropist, environmental advocate, and campaigner against nuclear weapons.

CNN said Turner became one of the largest private landowners in the United States and played a significant role in reintroducing bison to parts of the American West.

MEDIA LEGACY DEBATED

He also founded the United Nations Foundation and created the environmental children’s cartoon “Captain Planet.”

Yet in recent years, CNN — long after Turner sold the network — faced criticism from conservatives and some media analysts who argued it had moved away from mainly objective reporting toward what they described as a more liberal editorial direction.

The network also faced growing competition as broadcasters worldwide expanded into 24-hour news operations, including BBC News, Deutsche Welle, Al Jazeera, Fox News, and Sky News.

However, Turner’s vision of making the world smaller through global television coverage is unlikely to be forgotten.

In recent years, Turner suffered from Lewy body dementia, a degenerative condition that can include symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease.

FINAL YEARS

He reportedly experienced fatigue, exhaustion, and increasing memory problems during his later years.

CNN said Turner was surrounded by family members in his final moments.

Tributes poured in Wednesday from journalists, political leaders, and former colleagues who credited Turner with reshaping modern television journalism and bringing international news into living rooms across the globe.

Turner is survived by his five children and extended family. He was previously married to actress Jane Fonda, whom he once described as the “great love of his life.”
