(Worthy News) – The Pentagon has abruptly canceled the deployment of a U.S. armored brigade to Poland, marking another significant step in President Donald Trump’s effort to reduce America’s military footprint in Europe and shift greater responsibility for the continent’s defense onto NATO allies, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The canceled deployment involved the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team of the 1st Cavalry Division, known as the “Black Jack” brigade, a force of more than 4,000 troops based at Fort Hood, Texas. Some soldiers and equipment were reportedly already en route when the order was halted, surprising some U.S. military officials who had expected a more methodical drawdown process.

The decision follows the Pentagon’s recent announcement that 5,000 troops would be removed from Germany. President Trump has indicated the reductions could go further, saying the administration is “cutting a lot further than 5,000” and warning that U.S. forces could also be pulled from Italy and Spain.

Pentagon officials have described the shift as part of a broader reconfiguration of America’s role in Europe, with the long-term goal of having European allies carry the primary burden for conventional defense while U.S. forces focus more heavily on homeland defense and the Indo-Pacific.

The move comes as Washington reassesses its commitments across the continent following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and growing frustration inside the Trump administration over European countries that have not aligned closely with U.S. policy, including during the recent war with Iran.

Poland, however, has maintained close relations with the Trump administration, and Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz sought to downplay the cancellation, saying it “does not concern Poland” directly but is tied to previously announced changes in the U.S. military presence in Europe. He added that Poland’s expanding military capabilities, together with the continued presence of U.S. forces, strengthen NATO’s eastern flank.

The Pentagon has not publicly detailed how the canceled brigade deployment fits into its broader defense strategy for Europe. A senior NATO military official said the alliance would continue maintaining a strong presence along its eastern flank.

The decision underscores a sharp strategic pivot: Washington is no longer willing to carry Europe’s defense burden at the same level while many allies expand their own military capacity. In Trump’s view, the era of open-ended American deployments without proportional allied responsibility is coming to an end.
