Trump Joins ‘Rededicate 250’ Prayer Rally Amid Debate Over Faith In Public Life

WASHINGTON (Worthy News) – U.S. President Donald J. Trump was due to join a major prayer gathering in Washington D.C. on Sunday dubbed “Rededicate 250,” part of nationwide events marking America’s 250th anniversary despite criticism over faith and religion’s role in public life.
Advertised as a “rededication of our country as One Nation Under God” and a “once in a lifetime national moment,” the daylong prayer celebration on the National Mall was aimed at reflecting “on the faith of America’s founders” and appealing “to God to bless and guide the nation,” organizers said.
The rally is linked to Freedom 250, a White House-backed public-private initiative organizing patriotic events during America’s 250th anniversary year.
Supporters welcomed the event as a tribute to America’s spiritual roots and Christian heritage, while critics argued the heavily Christian-themed gathering promoted an exclusionary nationalist vision closely aligned with Trump’s “Make America Great Again” movement.
Among the most outspoken critics was Jared Huffman, a Democratic congressman from California known for advocating a strict separation between church and state.
CHRISTIAN NATIONALISM DEBATE
Huffman reportedly described the gathering as a “gross misuse of power” and a “religious extremist event,” warning that it risked blurring constitutional boundaries between government and religion.
The advocacy organization Americans United for Separation of Church and State also criticized the event, saying it advances Christian nationalism rather than religious freedom.
However, supporters strongly rejected those accusations. Robert Jeffress, pastor of First Baptist Church in Dallas and a longtime Trump ally, defended the rally by emphasizing what he described as America’s Christian foundation.
Trump was expected to deliver a recorded video message, while cabinet members, evangelical leaders, Catholic bishops, influencers, and Christian entertainers were scheduled to appear.
Among the featured participants were House Speaker Mike Johnson, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
CHRISTIAN LEADERS FEATURED
Christian music star Chris Tomlin, known for songs including “How Great Is Our God,” was due to headline the event.
Also expected was Jonathan Roumie, the actor portraying Jesus in the television series The Chosen.
Evangelical influencer Sadie Robertson Huff, evangelist Franklin Graham, and White House faith adviser Paula White-Cain were also listed among participants.
Organizers said most of the 19 listed faith leaders were evangelical Christians, with Rabbi Meir Soloveichik the only currently announced non-Christian religious leader.
The gathering inspired both supportive and opposing events in Washington.
POLL SHOWS U.S. DIVISION
A new survey released by the Pew Research Center suggested most Americans remain cautious about closer ties between religion and government.
The poll of 3,592 U.S. adults found that while more than half of Americans believe religion plays a positive role in society, most oppose churches endorsing political candidates or becoming heavily involved in political affairs.
Only 17 percent supported declaring Christianity the official religion of the United States, according to the survey.
Political scientist John Green said explicit Christian nationalist messaging appeals to only a relatively small segment of Americans, including within the Republican Party.
Yet, the Council on American-Islamic Relations urged organizers to broaden the list of speakers to better reflect America’s religious diversity.
As a symbolic protest, activists planned to project messages including “Democracy NOT Theocracy” and “Reject Christian Nationalism” onto the walls of Washington’s National Gallery of Art during the weekend events.
