Southern Baptist Convention Confronts Same-Sex Marriages and ‘Transgenderism’

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND (Worthy News)– Tuesday the nation’s largest Protestant body voted against the “moral validation” of the transgendered since God’s original design was to create two distinct and complementary sexes, according to Christian Today.

Sixteen million members strong, the Southern Baptist denomination continues to define marriage as between one man and one woman and teaches that homosexuality isn’t a valid alternative lifestyle. And should a Baptist congregation decide to affirm, approve or endorse homosexual behavior, it will no longer be in cooperation with the denomination.

Back in February, the Rev. Danny Cortez said the Southern Baptists of New Heart Community Church as well as his own son — who only recently come out of the closet — had helped convince him that homosexuality isn’t a sin.

After the New Heart congregation voted against dismissing Cortez, evangelical Albert Mohler — president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary — concluded that a church will either believe and teach same-sex behaviors and relationships are sinful, or it will affirm them. But despite what happened at New Heart, Mohler had blogged that the Southern Baptist body “will act in accordance with its own convictions, confession of faith, and constitution” at this week’s convention.

In 2013, a Pew Research Center survey found that about eight-in-ten Protestant evangelicals said it was a sin to engage in homosexual behavior. Overall, 45 percent of the general public said homosexual behavior was sinful.
