Lao believer dies after denied meds in prison

By Joseph DeCaro

(Worthy News) – A Laotian Christian who was jailed after praying for a convert to Christ has recently died from complications after he was denied medicine while imprisoned for nine months.

According to Barnabas Aid, Kwentianthong Tiang was arrested with four other believers on June 24, 2014. Initially they were all charged with the murder of a woman in Savannakhet province who — along with her eight adult children — converted to Christianity and asked a local church to pray for her healing.

Although all five Christians were found not guilty of the woman’s murder, they were later convicted of “performance of the medical profession without a license” and were sentenced to prison.

However, prison authorities refused to treat Tiang’s diabetes, so months after he was released from prison, the 61-year-old father of six died as a result of diabetic complications in September.

Lao authorities closely monitor the religious activity of converts to Christ to discourage any further spread of Christianity in the country.
