(AgapePress) – Colorado Congressman Bob Schaffer has been leading the charge in Congress to defend the right of government agencies to post our national motto. Today he is celebrating the overwhelming passage of House Resolution 548, which he introduced to encourage the display of the motto, “In God We Trust,” in all public buildings.

Schaffer said, “Our national motto, like the pledge of allegiance, is more than just words, and it should be displayed to remind Americans of our heritage.” Schaffer introduced the resolution to support the Colorado School Board, which passed a similar resolution.

The ACLU has threatened to sue at least one county official in Kansas for posting the motto in her office. Schaffer does not mince words when it comes to his feelings about the ACLU. He says the ACLU’s agenda is clear.

“The American Civil Liberties Union has very little about it which is American or civil,” Schaffer says, “nor much less in the support of liberty. Here’s an organization that is trying to constrain the liberty of an individual who believes the national motto–which is a political statement as much as it is a spiritual one–should be posted in a political office.”

Schaffer says the ACLU’s argument that the posting of the national motto is government buildings is an endorsement of religion is not what the founding fathers intended when they wrote the Constitution.

“It is inconsistent with the beliefs of our founding fathers and most Americans,” he says, “that a republican form of government [that] ultimately represents the people should ignore…the people [who say] that all of our strength, all of our liberties, all of our rights are derived from the Almighty God and from our Creator, not from the government itself.”

Schaffer says the men who wrote the Constitution knew that their authority came from God.
