(Worthy News) – China is seeking to deter the US from its current Iran policy, Reuters reports.

Chinese State Councilor Wang Yi upbraided the Trump administration Tuesday for its “extreme pressure methods” against the Iranian regime, saying the economic sanctions designed to bring Iran to heel regarding its pursuit of nuclear arms and proxy activities could open a “Pandora’s box” in the Middle East.

“Any unilateral behavior has no basis in international law. Not only will it not resolve the problem, it will only create an even greater crisis,” said Yi in Beijing after meeting with Syria’s foreign minister.

China suffered perhaps the greatest blow on May 1st when the Trump administration implemented sanctions on Iran’s oil industry geared toward bringing its oil exports to zero, revoking six months of waivers that had allowed China and seven other countries to continue to purchase Iranian oil without penalties.

Last year, Reuters reports that China purchased 585,400 barrels of Iranian oil per day, making it Iran’s foremost crude oil customer.
