(Worthy News) – A knife-wielding man fatally stabbed a school deputy head and injured at least five in northern Slovakia before being killed by police, officials say.

Thursday’s attack was carried out by a 22-year-old former pupil who had broken into the United School in the town of Vrutky, according to investigators. The establishment operates for children from elementary age up to high school.

Police said they shot dead the attacker, who was from the nearby town of Martin. His motives were not immediately known, and it was unclear whether a group was behind the violence.

The Slovak rescue service said three adults and two students were treated in a hospital in Martin but didn’t immediately reveal more details.

School attacks are rare in Slovakia, a small European Union nation of over 5 million people.

Slovak President Zuzana Caputova said she felt ”great sorrow” and offered her condolences to the relatives of the victims and support for those who were wounded, teachers, and police.

“Unfortunately, crazy people are living among us, and we’re not able to prevent such a situation,” Prime Minister Igor Matovic added.
