(Worthy News) – Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has stated he would want to pass legislation cementing Roe v Wade, the Supreme Court case which legalized abortion, as the “law of the land,” the Washington Examiner reports. During an NBC town hall Monday, Biden said such legislation would be the “only responsible response” to President Trump’s nomination of pro-life judge Amy Coney Barrett for the Supreme Court.

A 7th Circuit Court of Appeals judge and Notre Dame Law School professor, Barrett has a well-reported pro-life position in relation to Roe v. Wade: Democrats are fearful she will work to overturn the 1973 ruling.

“I don’t think the core case — Roe’s core holding that, you know, women have a right to an abortion — I don’t think that would change. But I think the question of whether people can get very late-term abortions, how many restrictions can be put on clinics — I think that would change,” Barrett said at Jacksonville University, Florida in 2016.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham announced Monday that Barrett’s confirmation hearings are scheduled to begin on October 12, Fox News reports.

“We don’t know exactly what [Barret] will do, although the expectation is that she may very well move to overrule Roe,” Biden said at the town hall on Monday. “The only responsible response to that would be to pass legislation making Roe the law of the land.”
