(Worthy News) – Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Christopher Coury on Sunday recused himself from presiding over a challenge to a Republican 2020 election audit Arizona requested by state Senate Republicans, the Washington Examiner reports.

Judge Coury recused himself shortly before a scheduled hearing in the matter, on the grounds that a new lawyer in the case, Chris Viskovic, had worked as an extern in his office within the last five years, the Examiner said.Viskovic now works as a junior associate at Kolodin Law Group PLLC, which is representing cybersecurity firm Cyber Ninjas in the matter.

The recusal was announced in an order issued by the judge, after filings the court received at 4pm listed new lawyers for the first time. The order said the case would be reassigned but no timeline or new judge’s name was indicated.

The audit of the 2020 election in Arizona includes a recount of the 2.1 million ballots cast in Maricopa County and a forensic audit of the voting machines, the Examiner said. Democrats had tried to stop the audit on the grounds it breaches state election security, but then declined to pay the $1 million bond Judge Coury set to temporarily pause it.

The judge also ordered the auditors to provide documents about their procedures in time for a hearing on Monday.
