Hungary Mourning Victims Of Massive Bus Crash; Eight Killed, Dozens Injured

(Worthy News) – Hungary’s prime minister has urged Hungarians to look after each other after a massive bus crash killed eight people and injured dozens.
Viktor Orbán’s appeal on social media came amid broader concerns about road safety in Hungary and other Eastern European nations.
Sunday’s crash occurred on Hungary’s M7 highway near the town of Szabadbattyán between the capital, Budapest, and Lake Balaton. Authorities said the bus with Hungarian license plates broke through a guardrail and collided with a bridge pillar.
Firefighters had to free more than a dozen people trapped in the bus, said Anett Szabó-Bisztricz, a spokesperson for the Fejer County Directorate-General for Disaster Protection.
Other passengers were able to leave the vehicle, according to officials.
Pál Győrfi, a spokesman for the national ambulance service, said that besides eight deaths, another eight people sustained severe injuries, and 40 had minor injuries.
The bus was transporting Hungarians from the summer holidays in Croatia. It had reportedly departed from the Croatian island of Krk late Saturday. The bus driver was among the dead.
Prime Minister Orbán expressed his “sincere condolences to the families of the victims.” And, “Let us look after each other on the roads,” he added.
Investigators were expected to look into reports that the driver may have been tired after a long trip. Many Hungarians seek holidays near the Adriatic Sea coast or near Hungary’s lakes amid a massive heatwave impacting the nation and much of Europe.
