(Worthy News) – The United States said Friday it regrets France’s decision to recall its ambassador from Washington after a row over submarines caused their worst diplomatic tensions in years.

We “will continue to be engaged in the coming days to resolve differences between the two countries,” a White House official said.

France recalled its ambassadors to the U.S. and Australia because they effectively ended a deal to purchase French-designed submarines worth 90 billion Australian dollars ($66 billion).

Instead, Washington will help Australia acquire nuclear-powered submarines as part of a new Indo-Pacific strategic alliance also including Britain.

Earlier Australian diplomats canceled a gala at their Washington embassy to celebrate its close ties with the U.S. to protest President Joe Biden’s nuclear submarine deal with Australia.

The embassy event was supposed to commemorate the 240th anniversary of the Battle of the Capes when the French Navy fought the British Navy during the Revolutionary War.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, and U.S. President Biden created a trilateral partnership known as AUKUS.

The alliance comes when China challenges decades of U.S. leadership and naval dominance in the Indo-Pacific region.
