WASHINGTON (Worthy News) – Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, America’s controversial infectious-disease expert and a key White House adviser during the coronavirus pandemic, plan to step down in December after more than half a century in public service.

The 81-year-old Fauci, who made the announcement late Monday, has led the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases since 1984.

He joined the parent agency, the National Institutes of Health, in 1968 as a 27-year-old doctor.

Fauci had just finished medical residency and was quickly identified as “a rising star” by his supporters.

Yet, in later life, he faced a backlash over his alleged involvement in the Wuhan laboratory in China, from where the pandemic may have originated, to supporting coronavirus vaccines for children.

Last year, Fauci was pressed by Senator Rand Paul to say whether the National Institutes of Health had ever funded risky coronavirus research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

INFECTIOUS DISEASE

An angry Fauci denied wrongdoing.

Fauci’s tenure as director of the infectious-diseases institute made him an adviser to seven presidents and put him on the front lines of every modern-day scourge.

He was involved in tackling AIDS, the 2001 anthrax scares, Ebola, Zika, and the coronavirus pandemic.

During the nearly four decades Fauci led the agency, it grew from a little-known institute with a $350 million annual budget to a global powerhouse with a budget exceeding $6 billion.
