KYIVV (Worthy News) – A team of the UN’s nuclear watchdog rushed to Europe’s largest nuclear power plant in war-torn Ukraine on Monday amid fears of an atomic disaster.

Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said the team was due to arrive at the embattled six-reactor station in Zaporizhzhia later this week.

“We must protect the safety and security of Ukraine’s and Europe’s biggest nuclear facility,” he stressed in published remarks.

The nuclear plant has been occupied by invading Russian troops since March, but shelling has continued around the area.

Ukrainian authorities have begun distributing iodine tablets, but clashes around the facility in Ukraine’s southeast has led to mounting global concern over the safety and security of the site.

Ukraine and Russia have accused one another of shelling the area, with residents desperately walking between ruined homes.
