BRASILIA (Worthy News) – Brazilian police began regaining control in the capital of Brasília Monday, where thousands of supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro attacked government buildings, including Congress, the presidential palace, and the Supreme Court.

It came as President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, also known as Lula, returned to Brasilia from a visit to São Paulo, walking past shattered windows and ripped artwork in the presidential palace in the capital.

Two justices then took him on a tour of the Sunday’s destruction in the Supreme Court, according to local television station Globo.

Brazil’s police said some 300 people were arrested following Sunday’s protests.

Media images showed police taking back control of the presidential palace as they escorted handcuffed protesters off the palace ramp.
Commentators said the violence was even worse than those on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, by rioters claiming to be supporters of then-U.S. President Donald Trump.

President Lula said Sunday that false claims of election fraud by his predecessor had fueled the attack on the plaza, known as Three Powers Square, because of the presence of the three branches of government.

Bolsonaro “triggered this,” he said in an address to the nation. “He spurred attacks on the three powers whenever he could. This is also his responsibility.”
