NEW YORK (Worthy News) – Footage apparently taken from an air traffic control tower showed a fire truck crossing a runway before being struck by an Air Canada Express plane at New York’s LaGuardia Airport.

The crash, in which the pilot and co-pilot were killed and numerous others injured, raised urgent questions about communications and coordination at one of America’s busiest aviation hubs.

Air Canada President and CEO Michael Rousseau described the incident as a “very somber day” for the airline.

“Today is a very somber day at Air Canada,” Rousseau said in a video statement obtained by Worthy News. “First and most importantly, I want to express our deepest sorrow for everyone affected.”

AIR CANADA RESPONDS TO DEADLY CRASH

The aircraft, operated by Jazz Aviation on behalf of Air Canada, was carrying 72 passengers and four crew members.

“The event happened at LaGuardia Airport after Air Canada flight AC 8646… a CRJ-900 aircraft traveling from Montreal to New York, had landed,” Rousseau said.

“We now know that the captain and the first officer were killed in this accident. We are deeply saddened by the loss of two Jazz employees, and our deepest condolences go out to the entire Jazz community and their families.”

He added that the airline’s focus remains on supporting those affected.

“Our efforts are focused on the needs of our passengers and crew members, along with their families and loved ones,” Rousseau said. “We know this is a difficult day for everyone.”

INVESTIGATION AND SUPPORT UNDERWAY

Rousseau stressed that many details remain unclear.

“At this early stage, we do not have all the answers as the circumstances are still being assessed,” he said, adding that Air Canada is working with authorities and supporting the investigation.

The airline has activated a special assistance team and set up a helpline for relatives of passengers.

“We’re fully supporting the relevant investigative authorities… and doing everything we can to take care of those impacted,” Rousseau added.

Officials have not yet confirmed the full number of injuries or whether there were additional fatalities.
