(Worthy News) – Russia and China vetoed a resolution at the United Nations Security Council aimed at protecting navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, despite overwhelming support from 11 member nations.

The Bahrain-backed measure had already been weakened—stripped of any language authorizing force—and merely called for defensive cooperation to safeguard commercial shipping. Even so, Moscow and Beijing opposed the resolution, siding against efforts to counter Iran’s growing threat to global commerce.

U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz sharply rebuked the vetoes, warning that Iran is effectively holding the global economy hostage by restricting a waterway responsible for roughly 20% of the world’s energy flow. President Donald Trump has made clear that reopening the strait is non-negotiable, cautioning of serious consequences if Iran refuses.

Iran praised the vetoes, underscoring the deep divide at the U.N. as Western nations push back against escalating instability in the region.
