Display of ‘In God We Trust’ encouraged by House resolution

WASHINGTON (BP)–The U.S. House of Representatives adopted a resolution July 24 encouraging the display of “In God We Trust,” the national motto, in public buildings.

The House action, which was by voice vote, followed approval of a similar resolution earlier this year by the Colorado Board of Education.

“In God We Trust” was first inscribed on U.S. coins during the Civil War and was adopted as the national motto in 1956. It is displayed above the entrance to the Senate chamber and on the wall behind the speaker’s platform in the House chamber.

“The words ‘In God We Trust’ imply our early leaders were not solely dependent on themselves — they acknowledged the Almighty as the giver of life and liberty,” said the resolution’s chief sponsor, Rep. Bob Schaffer, R.-Colo., in a written statement. “It is important for us to reiterate our appreciation for these precepts today and as often as possible.”
