Billions of ‘uncommonly large’ locusts threaten eastern Africa

locust swarm(Worthy News) – A locust swarm of biblical proportions has swept into Kenya and other parts of Africa, as the UN says that $76 million will be needed to combat the plague, which experts say could grow by five hundred times by June if not contained.

Sudan, Djibouti, and Eritrea were also affected after billions of locusts flew in from Somalia and Ethiopia following devastating rains that destroyed crops and created a hunger crisis for millions.

“So far we have decimated around five swarms in Samburu and Isiolo (counties) but we keep on receiving more swarms every week, and that is a lot in terms of the ecosystem,” Salat Tutana, chief of agriculture in Isiolo county, Kenya. “They are destroying the environment.”

Kenya is one of Africa’s majority Christian nations at 85% of the population, but believers have recently been harassed by the Al-Shabab Islamic militant group from neighboring Somalia, which has crossed the border and killed hundreds of Kenyan Christians.
