Biden says insurance companies should treat genital reconstruction surgery as necessary

(Worthy News) – The presumptive Democrat presidential nominee Joe Biden has stated insurance companies should treat genital reconstruction surgery as a medical necessity for transgender people, the Washington Examiner reports.

Speaking about LGBTQ+ matters during an online interview with the Human Rights Campaign on Wednesday, Biden said his administration would ensure that insurance companies “treat gender confirmation surgery as a medical necessity, which it is.”

Biden’s statement Wednesday confirms a campaign pledge that appears on his official website: “Biden will ensure that LGBTQ+ individuals have full access to all appropriate health care treatments and resources. This includes covering care related to transitioning—including gender confirmation surgery.”

Biden noted Wednesday that the Affordable Care Act, brought in while he was vice-President during the Obama administration, had prevented insurers from charging higher premiums based on sexual orientation. He added: “Trump has been trying to gut these protections since he took office. Anyone involved in patient care, from the board of directors to a receptionist in charge of scheduling, could put their beliefs above your healthcare.”

Regarding health care for everyone, the official Joe Biden campaign website promises: President Biden will defend the rights of all people—regardless of gender, sexual orientation, gender identity—to have access to quality, affordable health care free from discrimination.
