(Worthy News) – US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has had talks with Greek Prime Minister Kyrias Mitsotakis about possibly transferring its highly strategic US airbase from Turkey to Greece, DEBKAfile sources have revealed. The US is also reportedly in talks with Crown Prince Mohamed Bin Zayed of the United Arab Emirates about moving the Turkish base to the Gulf state.

According to DEBKAfile, the Trump administration wants to increase its military presence in the Eastern Mediterranean “while slapping down Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan for his anti-Western rhetoric, covetous fingers in every conflicted pie in the region, and weapons deals with Moscow.” Set up during the Cold War, the US base at Incirlik has recently been used to launch airstrikes against ISIS in Syria and Iraq.

Pompeo’s discussion with Mitsotakis took place on Tuesday, September 29, during Pompeo’s visit to a US naval base on the Greek island of Crete. While the two leaders discussed tensions between Greece and Turkey over East Mediterranean energy exploration rights, DEBKAfile contends that the true purpose of the meeting was to discuss a possible transfer of the Turkish base to Greece.

Nevertheless, DEBKAfile reports, the New Khaleej news outlet has said the Pentagon is in talks about moving its base in Turkey to UAE controlled territory on the south coast of Yemen, including Socotra Island.

Pentagon spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Campbell has reportedly there are any imminent plans to move the Incirlik base at this time, DEBKAfile reports.
