Germany’s New Christian Democrats Leader Pledges Healing

(Worthy News) – Centrist Armin Laschet has pledged to heal divisions after being elected to lead Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU) and perhaps succeed her as Germany’s chancellor.
Laschet, premier of the country’s most populous state, beat arch-conservative Friedrich Merz in a ballot of CDU party delegates.
Merkel, the European Union’s dominant politician who won elections since taking office in 2005, said she wouldn’t run for chancellor again in September’s federal election.
Laschet, 59, pledged dialogue with all the country’s democratic parties, adding that these were times in which democrats had to stand together.
“Especially in these days that we are experiencing in the world, the phrase ‘unity, justice and freedom’ is more topical than ever,” he stressed. It was a reference to the opening stanza of the German national anthem.
“Let us fight together for these principles against all those who want to endanger them,” Laschet added.
Whoever comes to power will oversee Europe’s largest economy, which is still coping with the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic and massive migration.
