(Worthy News) – Indianapolis was plunged into mourning Friday after a gunman killed eight people and then himself at a FedEx facility in the sprawling U.S. city, officials said.

The shooting at the international delivery service also left at least four others injured, Worthy News monitored. “It is very heartbreaking,” said police spokeswoman Officer Genae Cook as relatives rushed to a nearby staging hotel.

The late Thursday attack was reported at the FedEx facility shortly after 11 p.m., and officers arrived at “an active shooter incident,” Cook recalled.

She told the media that the gunman killed himself at the scene. A search at the warehouse at 8951 Mirabel Road found eight people deceased with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds, the spokeswoman added.

Four people were then transferred to area hospitals, including one person in critical condition. “This is a sight that no one should have to see,” Cook stressed.

Officials said no motive had been established yet, and noted that one may never be determined. “We’ll never really know all the ins and outs of why this occurred, but we’ll try our best,” explained police chief Randal Taylor.

Craig McCartt, the deputy chief of criminal investigations, suggested that finding a motive won’t be easy. He said the gunman began firing as soon as he arrived at the building. “This suspect came to the facility and when he came there, he got out of his car and pretty quickly started some random shooting outside the facility,” he explained. “No confrontation or argument, he just appeared to randomly start shooting.”

The incident marks the fifth mass shooting in the United States in as many weeks, amid mounting pressure on U.S. President Joe Biden to increase police presence in troubled areas.

Earlier, there were massacres at three spas in metro Atlanta, a supermarket in Boulder, Colo., a southern California office building, and a private residence in South Carolina.
Critics have expressed concern about defunding police calls within the Democratic Party, warning that it will increase gun violence.
