(Worthy News) – Microsoft founder Bill Gates says he and his wife Melinda are splitting up after 27 years of marriage.

The couple also announced their divorce in a statement saying, “We no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives.”

Both launched their philanthropic organization, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, in 2000 that played a key and sometimes controversial role in vaccinations.

“We have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives,” they stressed.

“We continue to share a belief in that mission and will continue our work together at the foundation. But we no longer believe we can growth together as a couple in this next phase of our lives, ” they said.

It was not immediately clear what impact if any, the divorce would have on the foundation. In response to the coronavirus pandemic, the foundation said it committed a total of $1.75 billion to accelerate “development and equitable distribution of COVID-19 tests, treatments, and vaccines.”

The Gates’ remarks suggested an attempt to continue philanthropy uninterrupted.

But divorces in the U.S. can be messy and expensive. The widely published divorce of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and philanthropist and author MacKenzie Scott in 2019, for instance, cost as much as 68 billion dollars.
