KYIV/WASHINGTON (Worthy News) – With much of his nation facing an expanding Russian invasion, war-time Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appealed to the U.S. Congress for help in a history-making speech.

His address came as U.S. President Joe Biden unveiled an additional $800 million in military aid. Yet Zelensky made clear Wednesday that his nation urgently needed the U.S.-led NATO military alliance to help halt Russian attacks and establish a no-fly zone. NATO has been reluctant, fearing a confrontation with nuclear-armed Russia

However, embattled Zelenskyy cited bombed Pearl Harbor during World War Two and the terror attacks of September 11, 2001, to urge legislators to help Ukraine’s fight against Russia. “We need you right now,” Zelensky said in remarks live-streamed at the U.S. Capitol, where he had received a standing ovation.

For the first time in a public address to world leaders, he showed a packed auditorium of lawmakers a graphic video of the destruction and devastation his country has suffered. It contained heartbreaking scenes of civilian casualties.

Appearing in his now-trademark army green T-shirt, the comic-turned-president has emerged as a crucial leader during Europe’s most significant security threat since World War II.

Almost 3 million refugees have fled Ukraine, the fastest exodus in modern times.

Zelensky thanked the American people, saying Ukraine is grateful for the outpouring of support, even as he urged Biden to do more.

“You are the leader of the nation. I wish you be the leader of the world,” he said. “Being the leader of the world means being the leader of peace.”
