DENPASAR, INDONESIA (Worthy News) – Indonesia’s tourist island of Bali is reeling from a series of gang-style killings involving foreign nationals, including the fatal stabbing of a Dutch convicted drug offender.

Police said 49-year-old Dutch national Rene Pouw was killed late March 23 in the Kerobokan area after being attacked by two men on a motorcycle.

Investigators said the assailants repeatedly stabbed the victim in the head, neck and upper body as he tried to defend himself.

The attack unfolded in front of his girlfriend, who fled and hid near a nearby villa after one of the attackers briefly pursued her with a bloodied weapon, according to police.

Authorities have identified two foreign suspects, believed to be Brazilian nationals, and say both fled Indonesia shortly after the attack. Police have requested assistance from Interpol, the international police agency, to locate and arrest the suspects.

CRIMINAL BACKGROUND AND TARGETED ATTACK

Dutch media reported that the victim was a convicted drug trafficker who had been on the run from Dutch authorities.

He was sentenced to five years in prison in 2005 but absconded after serving about one year while on leave, according to those reports.

The man was later rearrested in Spain in 2011 and served the remainder of his sentence before eventually relocating to Southeast Asia.

The reports said he had previously drawn the attention of investigators and may have been linked to a major Dutch criminal case known as the “Passage” trial.

Indonesian police said the motive remains under investigation, though early indications suggest the killing may have been targeted rather than a robbery, as no belongings were reported missing.

SURGE IN VIOLENT CRIME

Badung Police, responsible for the main tourist areas in southern Bali, said authorities have launched a manhunt to identify and apprehend the suspects.

“This case is a priority for us,” police chief Joseph Edward Purba said.

The killing follows a string of violent incidents involving foreign nationals on the island, raising concerns about possible links to organized crime.

A forensic specialist working in Bali said there has been a sharp increase in murders.

“From the time I started working in Bali until the end of 2024, I performed an autopsy on just one murder victim,” said Dr. Nola Margaret Gunawan.

MURDER RATE RISING SHARPLY

“But in the first six months of 2025, I received one murder victim every month,” she added.

She said the Dutch victim was already the second murder case she handled this year.

Last month, a Ukrainian man, believed to be in his late 20s, was abducted by several men while riding with friends before later being found dead near a beach.

Authorities said the victim had been held, assaulted, and killed, with human remains — including a skull and other body parts — recovered along the shoreline.

In a video circulated online, the man pleaded with his parents for help, saying, “I beg you, please help me,” while referring to a ransom demand.

MISTAKEN IDENTITY KILLING

In another case, 32-year-old Australian national Zivan Radmanovic was shot dead in June 2025 at a villa in Bali.

Investigators said he was killed after gunmen mistook him for another man in a debt-related dispute.

In March 2026, a court in Bali sentenced three Australian men — Mevlut Coskun, Paea I Middlemore Tupou, and Darcy Jenson — for their roles in the killing.

Two received 16-year prison sentences, while the third was sentenced to 12 years.

Another man was also wounded in the attack.

FOREIGN PRESENCE AND LOCAL CONCERNS

Authorities say the incidents come amid a growing influx of foreign nationals to Bali, including Russians and Ukrainians who relocated after the war in Ukraine.

Tens of thousands are believed to have settled on the island in recent years, some living in luxury compounds or working remotely.

“I have seen some Russians or Ukrainians flashing cash during parties here,” a local waiter told Worthy News, speaking on condition of anonymity. “I have mixed feelings about this, because while some live a luxury lifestyle here, many of their fellow countrymen are suffering or dying in the war back home.”

Officials have acknowledged that the increase in foreign residents has created challenges for law enforcement, including visa violations and suspected criminal activity.

NEW SAFETY CONCERNS EMERGE

Separately, police are investigating at least two cases involving foreign tourists who reported sexual assault on the island in recent days.

Authorities said a 22-year-old woman from Chongqing, China, reported that she was assaulted and robbed early Monday, March 24, at around 4 a.m. near a roadside close to Labuansait Beach in the Pecatu area of southern Bali.

She told police she had accepted a ride from a motorcyclist after leaving a bar, but realized she was being taken in the wrong direction before being attacked. The suspect later drove her to her accommodation but kept her cellphone.

In a separate incident, an Australian woman reported being assaulted early Tuesday, March 25, at around 4 a.m. at an entertainment venue in Seminyak. Police said a security guard at the venue has been detained as a suspect after the victim returned to retrieve belongings she had left behind.

Authorities said the suspect could face up to nine years in prison if convicted. Police confirmed that investigations into both cases are ongoing, adding that the victims have been left shocked and traumatized.

ONGOING INVESTIGATIONS

Police said they are continuing to track suspects in multiple cases and are examining possible links to international criminal networks.

Several individuals have reportedly been detained, while others are believed to have fled the country using false or multiple identities.

Authorities have urged residents and tourists to remain calm, stressing that Bali remains a safe destination despite the recent violence.
