Belgium, Netherlands Expel Dozens Of ‘Russian Spies’

BRUSSELS/THE HAGUE (Worthy News) – Belgium and the Netherlands said Tuesday they are expelling 38 suspected Russian spies from their territories.
Belgian Foreign Minister Sophie Wilmès stressed that her country would expel “21 Russian diplomats” on suspicion of spying and threatening the country’s security.
Her remarks came moments after Dutch Foreign Minister Wopke Hoekstra said his nation would deport 17 Russian security agents accredited as diplomats.
The apparently coordinated action by Belgium and the neighboring Netherlands comes amid the escalating East-West standoff over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The Netherlands already has a tense relationship with Moscow following the 2014 downing by a Russian missile of flight MH-17 over Ukraine in which all 298 people on board died.
Most of the victims, 193 of them, were Dutch citizens.
Moscow was expected to respond with a similar expulsion of diplomats as Europe plunged into a new Cold War and a possible expanding military conflict.
