JARANWALA, PAKISTAN (Worthy News) – Christians in Pakistan’s city of Jaranwala are still waiting for justice and government assistance more than two years after Muslim mobs rampaged through their community, an advocacy group told Worthy News Thursday.

The riots erupted on August 16, 2023, after blasphemy allegations against “two falsely accused Christian brothers,” investigators said.

Thousands of Muslims stormed a Christian colony in Punjab Province, destroying hundreds of homes and torching churches and businesses before authorities restored order.

Although more than 300 arrests were made, “none of the perpetrators who participated in the destruction have ever been sentenced,” confirmed advocacy group Voice of the Martyrs Canada (VOMC).

The brothers were later acquitted by the courts, affirming that the charges were fabricated.

NONVIOLENT PROTEST

Frustrated over delays, Christians from various denominations organized a 17-day nonviolent sit-in that ended September 2. Organizers said government officials appeared at “ceremonial” meetings, clad in suits and robes, but failed to engage meaningfully with survivors.

“This is not just the story of my family. This is the story of every Christian living in Pakistan,” one resident said in comments shared with Worthy News.

Protest organizer Lala Robin Daniel warned that demonstrations could resume if no concrete action follows official assurances.

Earlier this year, VOMC’s Minister-at-Large Greg Musselman traveled to Jaranwala to meet families whose homes were destroyed. The group urged prayers that residents “will receive ongoing strength, encouragement, and provision as they continue with the rebuilding of their homes, businesses, and lives.”

VOMC appealed to Pakistan’s authorities to fulfill promises of aid and ensure protection for Christians. It also asked supporters to pray that “the Gospel message of peace, love, and hope” will transform “the hearts of Muslim militants and so many others who are in desperate need of God’s eternal salvation through Christ.”

Pakistan is ranked 8th on the 2025 World Watch List of the 50 countries where advocacy group Open Doors says Christians face the most extreme persecution.
