Pakistan Police Detain Suspect In Killing Of Christian Man By Muslim Extremist Group (Worthy News Investigation)

VEHARI/ISLAMABAD (Worthy News) – Pakistani police have detained one suspected Islamic extremist and are searching for others over their alleged involvement in the killing of a devout Christian man in the country’s Punjab province, sources told Worthy News Friday.

The victim, 32-year-old Asif Raza, was unmarried but engaged and preparing for his wedding, according to Christians familiar with the case.

He was returning home on foot when he was ambushed in Danewal, a suburb of Vehari city, near the Danewal cemetery, on September 23, investigators told Worthy News.

According to the First Information Report (FIR) filed by the victim’s brother at Police Station Danewal—a document required to launch a criminal investigation in Pakistan—seven men stopped Raza around 7:00 p.m. local time.

Three suspects, identified as Azan, Wahab, and Hanan, along with four others yet to be named, allegedly subjected him to a vicious assault. Local Christians and police said the group repeatedly beat Raza with bricks, striking his head until he collapsed.

RELIGIOUS HATRED

The FIR, obtained by Worthy News, indicates the attack was “unprovoked and motivated by religious hatred,” as Raza was targeted because of his “Christian faith and his vulnerable socio-economic position.”

Despite being rushed for emergency treatment, he succumbed to his severe injuries the next day, September 24, confirmed Mushtaq Sardar Gill, a well-informed Christian human rights lawyer.

Gill, the founder of advocacy group LEAD Ministries Pakistan, told Worthy News that the attackers were linked to the Muhammad Wahab group, an extremist Islamic group active in the area.

Police said they had arrested Wahab, described as the main culprit, while the search for the other suspects continues.

Amid the ongoing investigation, Christian community members in the area expressed shock and grief. Raza’s relatives said he was “innocent and full of hope” as he prepared for marriage.

COMMUNITY OUTRAGE

They demanded immediate justice and firm government action to protect minorities such as Christians.

Pastor Imran Amanat, national leader of LEAD Ministries Pakistan, strongly condemned the killing, calling it a “targeted act of hatred rooted in religious intolerance.”

He told Worthy News: “This was not just a killing—it was a brutal message to an already marginalized community. We demand justice for Asif Raza and protection for all religious minorities in Pakistan.”

The pastor urged Christians worldwide and international human rights organizations to support Raza’s family through prayer and advocacy, warning of the rising threat of religious extremism in Pakistan.

This latest killing underscores the ongoing challenges faced by religious minorities in Pakistan, particularly Christians, Gill told Worthy News.

WIDER PATTERN

Christians are vulnerable to mob violence, discrimination, and what Gill and rights groups describe as “systemic denial of justice.”

They are also confronted with allegations of blasphemy under controversial legislation that can lead to years of imprisonment or even the death penalty.

According to Open Doors’ World Watch List 2025, Pakistan ranks eighth among the world’s 50 countries where Christians suffer the most extreme persecution.

In the 2025 report, Pakistan’s violent score remains at the maximum level, reflecting both high-intensity attacks and pervasive discrimination of Christians, suggested the report of advocacy group Open Doors.

This latest killing fits a larger pattern in a nation where Christians are among the most persecuted minority communities, say Gill and other human rights activists.

Despite reported persecution, some 4.5 million people identify as Christians, about 1.8 percent of Pakistan’s mainly Muslim population of roughly 250 million.
