KYIV/BUDAPEST (Worthy News) – Relations between Ukraine and Hungary have come under fresh strain after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Budapest of sending reconnaissance drones into Ukrainian airspace.

Zelenskyy claimed the drones were “likely Hungarian” and suggested they may have been monitoring Ukraine’s industrial sites along the shared border.

“There was a report from our military about frankly speaking strange events on the border between Ukraine and Hungary,” he said.

“Our military recorded drones and they were reconnaissance drones. I instructed the military to conduct a full investigation. And if such drones appear again, to respond accordingly to defend our state,” he added.

Hungary strongly rejected the accusations.

Its Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said Zelenskyy was “starting to go crazy from being anti-Hungarian,” adding that such claims would not help Ukraine’s efforts to join the European Union.

ESCALATING DIPLOMATIC TENSIONS

The dispute deepened as both nations barred military officials from entering each other’s territory in tit-for-tat measures.

The tensions highlight fragile relations between Kyiv and Budapest at a time when European unity is seen by government leaders as crucial in the face of Russia’s ongoing war. Kyiv has accused Hungary of pro-Russia policies, but Budapest says it is seeking peace.

Across the continent, security services remain alert to growing concerns about drone incursions.

Denmark recently reported mysterious drone activity near airports and other sensitive sites.

To strengthen defenses, Copenhagen is set to receive a Swedish anti-drone system ahead of key European summits next week.

BUILDING DRONE WALL

At the same time, eleven European countries have discussed building a so-called “drone wall,” drawing on Ukraine’s battlefield experience to protect the European Union from future aerial threats.

The EU’s Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius warned that Russia is “testing the EU and NATO military alliance.”

President Zelenskyy also insisted that Moscow’s provocations continue because, in his words, Western responses have been “weak.” “I think yes, there was a weak reaction. And that is why he [Russian President Vladimir Putin) continues with [attacking] other countries,” Zelenskyy warned.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk echoed those concerns, saying Russia harbors “ill intentions towards the whole world.”

With Russia on the offensive, a leaked EU document suggests that Brussels could raise 140 billion euros (approximately 150 billion U.S. dollars) in interest-free loans for war-torn Ukraine by utilizing profits generated from Russia’s frozen assets, without formally confiscating the funds.
