(Worthy News) – Two significant media companies claim their survey suggests that eight out of 10 American voters believe things in the United States “are out of control.” The NBC News/Wall Street Journal opinion poll, released Sunday, came amid sometimes violent protests over perceived racist police abuse and concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.

But pollsters admitted that they measured sentiments before Friday’s surprising jobs report found the unemployment rate declining to 13.3 percent and the economy adding 2.5 million jobs in May alone.

Before those numbers were published, surveyed Americans expressed worries about the social and economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Authorities claim the epidemic has cost more than 100,000 Americans their lives and tens of millions of jobs.

The poll showed a partisan divide, with 92 percent of Democrats claiming “the country is out of control” compared to 66 percent of Republicans. Only 15 percent of those surveyed between May 28 and June 2 said: “things are under control.”

The poll was conducted as protests began across the nation in response to the death of George Floyd, the unarmed black man who died while under police custody in the U.S. city of Minneapolis.

In one of the most massive protests so far, tens of thousands descended on the nation’s capital on Saturday. Many who came to Washington D.C. carried signs bearing slogans such as “Justice for George” and “Stop killing black people.”

However, U.S. President Donald Trump downplayed the numbers. He suggested that the crowd near the White House—which has been fortified with fencing in recent days—was “smaller” than expected.

“Much smaller crowd in D.C. than anticipated. National Guard, Secret Service, and D.C. Police have been doing a fantastic job.

Thank you!” Trump wrote on social networking site Twitter.
