Multiple Explosions Rock Kyiv; Several Killed (Update)

KYIV/BUDAPEST (Worthy News) – Russian missiles hit Ukraine’s capital Kyiv and several other cities across the country, killing at least eight people and injuring many more, authorities and witnesses said.

Monday’s attacks appeared to be Moscow’s retaliation for a major explosion that damaged the Kerch bridge connecting the occupied Crimea peninsula with the Russian mainland.

In central Kyiv, vehicles were seen on fire, and a high-rise complex housing offices of tech giant Samsung near the city’s main train station was seriously damaged.

This was the first time Kyiv was hit for months, and the explosions appeared more central than Russian strikes earlier in the war. Most victims were in the central Shevchenkivskyi district of Kyiv, where also at least 24 others were wounded, Ukraine’s Interior Ministry said.

Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, noted that the blasts hit the city’s heart, after 8 a.m. local time. Air raid sirens had sounded about 90 minutes earlier here and reportedly across the country.

Elsewhere the northeastern city of Kharkiv was also hit by strikes on Monday, the regional governor said. And Ukrainian news media reported missiles had hit Dnipro, an industrial center, and Zhytomyr, a city west of Kyiv.

RETALIATORY ATTACKS

Blasts also reportedly occurred in Ternopil, Khmelnytskyi, and Lviv in western Ukraine. There were also reports of overnight attacks in the area of Zaporizhzhia, home to Europe’s largest nuclear power plant.

Ukrainians braced for retaliatory attacks after Moscow said the explosion that damaged the bridge linking Russia with Crimea killed three people.

The strike embarrassed Moscow and could hinder its ability to supply its occupying forces in southern Ukraine, experts said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin called it a “terrorist attack.”

Monday’s attacks followed Sunday’s Russian missile strike on the southern city of Zaporizhzhia, killing more than a dozen people and injuring some 60 others, including children, Ukrainian officials said.

The strikes underscored broader concerns that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is far from over after Moscow faced significant losses on the battlefields.
