Pastor in Nepal punished in spite of following quarantine orders

(Worthy News) – A pastor in Nepal who made sure to fastidiously follow government regulations forbidding worship services was attacked by police anyway while at home with his family, the officers taunting him and Jesus.

Mohan Gurung of the Nissi church in Karnali province announced to his congregation that worship services would no longer be held following the government’s March 24th order of a total lockdown, even placing “handbills on the walls of the church about coronavirus and safety measures to be followed.”

“But the police had jumped off the gate, barged inside the premises and accused me of holding a worship service,” he told Morning Star News. “My attempts to explain to them that I was not holding a worship service failed, as they had already determined to arrest me.”

Pastor Gurung related that the officers were not content to arrest him, and began reviling him for his faith.

“Even at the police station, the officers were shouting at me, ‘Are you a fool? Your Jesus could not save himself on the cross. How can he save you from coronavirus?’,” he said.

Nepal is 32nd on Open Doors USA’s World Watch List for persecution of Christians as a result of the same Hindu nationalist movement that has swept across neighboring India.
